ICT - What is the Internet?

What is the internet?
The internet is many computers connected together that use the TCP/IP. Is is described as the networks of networks because the internet is the network that connects to all the other billions of networks. It works when many computers are connected to a single router (or the router is connected to other routers), even if it is just two computers connected to a router it is still considered as an internet. It is different to the telephone because the telephone only transfers and receives calls whereas the internet can share videos, pictures and information. It can still function like a telephone (skype, MSN).

The internet transfers things like videos and photos using packet switching. Packet switching is when you send something, it will split up in different packets and will get to the other computer the fastest way it can. Not all packets go the same direction, sometimes they split up and meet at the other computer. They will form back to what is is originally like, they each have a number to make sure that it arrived in the right place.
